One really unique drive is the Seagate Momentus XT. Look for your potential drive on the benchmark site and see how it fairs against other HDDs. This can be for a number of reasons, but often a big difference is that slower drives often have a larger cache to make up the deficit. Not all 7200RPM drives are faster than 5400RPM ones. Now, you don't need to get that drive (though it is apparently a very fine HDD), so here are some general tips:

I checked the drive out with a number of tools and it still runs perfectly, aside from that hum when I pick it up.

Aside from this, it's been great, but the noise always makes me feel like it has a flaw.īut maybe your experience will be different. It makes kind of a light saber-ish hum when I lift the laptop and move it around slowly, where my stock drive did not. In hindsight, either this was a poor choice, or I just got a weird drive. I used Hard Drive Benchmarks in conjunction with Newegg reviews and a sizeable discount bargain to settle on this 500GB 7200RPM Seagate. Let me start by sharing my experience when I was in your position last summer: I commented on two posts similar to this a while back, so allow me to just copy pasta the relevant parts: Special thanks for the CSS from its creators at /r/Apple: /u/Xapher19, and /u/gouch23!
